What to plant in June for Southeast Texas Gardens

The hot season is upon us! Just as heat stresses the human body, it stresses the garden as well. There are some great options to keep harvesting out of your garden during these hot months as the warm season plants begin to fade out. Lets take a look at a few things we can plant now:

Okra

A southern staple, Okra belongs to the mallow family and thrives in Southeast Texas summers. Easily plants by seed for consistent production up until September. They fade out just in time for your fall garden!

Southern Peas (Cream Peas, Crowder Peas, Purplehull Peas)

Southern peas also love the hot summers and can be planting along with your okra in a raised bed. Tall growing Okra varieties can act as a pole for vining peas to climb up if timed right.

Peppers

If you haven’t already planted peppers, there is still time to get them established and producing. In our climate a pepper plant can survive year round if we do not get a good freeze.

Arugula

Looking for some greens to mix up the garden? Arugula is your summertime go to.

Basil

Basil will produce for you all the way to the first freeze and will do very well in the hot summer months. Large leaf Italian basils will need to be kept up to maintain the best taste throughout the hot season, while others like African Blue Basil will grow very large and does not require pruning as often.

These are just a few of the most prominently grown hot season crops you can plant. Others include Rosemary, Sage, Oregano, Chives, Eggplant, Sweet Potatoes, and Luffas!
